How to size a solar water pump for your borehole

Depth, head, daily water need and sun hours — the four numbers that decide your pump and panel size.

Choosing the right solar pump starts with four numbers.

1. Total dynamic head

Add the static water level, the drawdown, the height of your tank above ground and pipe friction losses. This is the height the pump must lift.

2. Daily water requirement

  • A household: 100–200 litres per person per day
  • A dairy cow: about 80–100 litres per day
  • Drip irrigation: 3–5 litres per m² per day

3. Peak sun hours

Most of Kenya gets 5–6 peak sun hours a day — great for solar pumping.

4. Pick the pump and the array

Hydraulic energy (Wh) = flow (m³/day) × head (m) × 2.725. Divide by sun hours and pump efficiency to get the panel wattage.
